Like Sex and the City: The Movie, Sanaa Hamri’s continuation of the journey of a pair of jeans that magically fit four girls of disparate genes feels tailored for the small screen. Back for this sequel are Gilmore Girls’ Alexis Bledel, Joan of Arcadia’s Amber Tamblyn, Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively, and Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera, who’s the best thing in these disjointed, sketchy, saccharine scenes condensed from three (!) of Ann Brashares’s novels. They have little of the sex or the city in their separate locales: Lena (Bledel) is at RISD falling for her artist’s model; Tibby (Tamblyn) is at NYU averting an unwanted pregnancy (the pants, it seems, have their limits); Bridget (Lively) is at Brown learning to be Lara Croft; and Carmen (Ferrera) is at Yale getting lost before finding success in summer stock. In the end, the gals reunite, jumping off a cliff and . . . safely into an ocean. Thelma & Louise this ain’t. 117 minutes | Boston Common + Fenway + Fresh Pond + Chestnut Hill + Suburbs
