Review: It Might Get Loud

Davis Guggenheim films his essay on the electric guitar
Some guitar teachers will tell you there’s a right way and a wrong way to play the guitar. But Davis Guggenheim’s rousing new documentary, It Might Get Loud, reminds us that that’s not true at all.

Kollective soul

Kris Hansen's ever-evolving sound
Singer/songwriter Kris Hansen and longtime pal Bob Giusti certainly are no stranger to the local music scene, having played out and hosted scores of gigs and all-star, open-mic jam sessions for more than a dozen years as Kris Hansen's Left Hand Band, a tight-knit jazzy/folky-type trio. Their 08 self-titled debut (at CDbaby.com and iTunes) zigged and zagged across acoustic blues and roots-rock, with Hansen's pen celebrating a second chance at life after the Scituate native battled a near-fatal brain aneurysm on the eve of his 24th birthday, as well as Hansen, drummer Giusti, and bassist/engineer George Dussault all becoming dads during the recording process.

The Dead Weather | Horehound

Third Man (2009)
It's no coincidence that four of the 11 songs on the Dead Weather's debut — "I Cut like a Buffalo," "3 Birds," "Rocking Horse," and a cover of Bob Dylan's "New Pony" — make reference to the animal kingdom.

In the blood

VulGarrity is humming on all cylinders
“We don’t have five dudes on stage pounding out power chords, so we need to find other ways to fill up all that space,” said Shawn Garrity, one-half of the multitasking siblings known as VulGarrity (sister Tracy is three years younger). “It forces us to think differently than before, and that’s proven to be a breathe of fresh air.

Ever want to throttle your co-worker, that well-meaning but slack-jawed doofus always peering over your cubicle? How about your partner at home, always leaving the seat up or making a Hansel-and-Gretel popcorn trail from the kitchen to the couch?

Keys to our hearts

Interview: Alicia Keys on first love, the White Stripes, and being a Bob Dylan muse
"I’ve never been someone that goes to the ‘it’ places and does the ‘it’ things and goes to the ‘it’ restaurant and go to the ‘it’ club. I like more off-the-beaten-path kind of things."

Electric Six

I Shall Exterminate Everything around Me that Restricts Me from Being the Master | Metropolis
ITunes has Detroit’s Electric Six filed under “blues,” and the acoustic-guitar riff that kicks off the band’s new disc is bloozy in a LedZep/White Stripes sorta way.
