WHY THEM? There’s more going on in one My Friends song than most bands manage to get off the ground in a whole stack of records. This sprawling group — somewhere around six members — mobs the stage with Afro-beat percussion and gangs of depraved Isaac Brock yelps, but the real overload is in those thorny compositions. Are these guys Talking Heads fan boys with an itch for the Contortions? The Dismemberment Plan covering a couple Deerhoof ditties at once? I’ll take any one of the above whenever it’s around, but My Friends duct tape it all together with no intentions of giving you a choice.

BONUS BIT! “Deep Blue” steals the theme from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly and grafts it onto the stutter-step beat from the Clash’s “Rudy Can’t Fail.” For some reason, it works.
