Though she may not look the part, Georgia Anne Muldrow makes nihilism sexy. The child of a prog-jazz household (her mother sang with Pharoah Sanders), Muldrow worked with the Platinum Pied Pipers and the spacehead trio Sa-Ra Creative Partners before signing to LA’s “It” label Stones Throw. Such successes for the Afro-topped 22-year-old would evidently translate into a joyous, celebratory debut. But Worthnothings is as cold as the outer space it inhabits. Aside from the thanks to her family on “Intro,” the EP is depression set to song. “Already committed suicide so that idea’s played,” she purrs on “Nothingness” before admitting “melancholy is my crutch” on “Demise.” For Muldrow, sadness and the daily complexities of existence are ample fodder for meandering synth lines and spacious arrangements. Don’t let her beaming press shots fool you: Georgia Anne is a siren in the truest sense of the word — an angelic voice inviting you into the heart of despair.
