The Lost City

Awful

The Lost City
WINDOW OF THE REVOLUTION: Garcia in The Lost City.

In 1990, Sydney Pollack refashioned Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca, setting the action during a period of political upheaval in Havana, with Robert Redford doing little to erase memories of Humphrey Bogart. Not content with aping one beloved classic, Andy Garcia’s musical journey through the Cuban Revolution pays homage to no less than Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. He directs himself in the initially apolitical role of tuxedo’d, piano-playing nightclub owner Fico Fellove, who’s drawn into both conflict and romance; his younger brothers (Enrique Murciano and Nestor Carbonell) become revolutionaries while his beautiful sister-in-law (Inés Sastre) becomes the “Widow of the Revolution.” Along the way, Dustin Hoffman plays Meyer Lansky as Dustin Hoffman and, as a shorts-clad Greek chorus, Bill Murray wanders in from another film. Self-indulgent, overreaching, and simply awful.
