The Juan Maclean

Almost every Tuesday night from 10:30 pm to 1 am on WNYU/89.1FM, New York DJ/producer Tim Sweeney live-mixes disco, house, electro, and offshoots and recombinants thereof, digging deep but reaching far into the future, too. Most nights he throws in a few tracks that won’t be released for upwards of a year. All his sets are streamable and downloadable as podcasts at //beatsinspace.net. Dubtribe Sound System, “Do It Now”
The defunct San Francisco–based house duo put this out in 1999 — more or less a swirling filter-house track with a fuzzy keyboard riff, quick hits of piano, and echoes of guitar chicken scratch.

The Juan MacLean, “Happy House”
Listen closely and you’ll notice that Juan interpolated the bass line and synth rhythms from “Do It Now” for “Happy House,” his first track since 2005’s stellar Less Than Human LP. It’s a love letter to early-’90s disco house, its tight wind bested only by Nancy Whang’s diva vocals and perfect diction.

Baby Oliver, “The Shots”
Bronx-based producer Baby Oliver follows up his debut single, “Primetime (Uptown Express),” with more digital-stutter rhythms and robot-friendly electro-funk. He delivers the chorus — “I call the shots” — in a baleful whisper, grating at first, by the end addictive.

Only Fools and Horses, “Spectacle Wins (Holy Ghost! Remix)”
Munich’s Only Fools and Horses, who include Permvac labelheads Ben Fröhlich and Tom Bioly, tapped New York’s Holy Ghost! to remix their debut track, a driving mid-tempo electrodisco number with spidery guitar dueling and moody synths that come and go as they please.
