Gore Gore GirlsGet the Gore | Bloodshot November 27,

This Detroit-based neo-garage combo take their name from an obscure early-’70s slasher flick, and there’s plenty of bad-ass nastiness on Get the Gore to back up the connection: a guitar solo in opener “Fox in a Box” sprays fuzz like fake blood, and “Pleasure Unit” rides a jackhammer beat that throbs with the unrelenting menace of a morning-after migraine. But the Gore Gore Girls temper their proud hand-me-down aggression with a tuneful tenderness that gives their retro racket a depth of feeling few of their peers seem interested in. “All Grown Up” has lovely harmony vocals out of the early Beach Boys songbook; “Where Evil Grows,” with trippy sitar and old-soul electric piano, slows the pace for a bit of self-reflection; “Sweet Potato” cops to a desire for a tuber to call one’s own. If you were disappointed by the Donnas’ recent Bitchin’, give the Gore Gores a whirl.
