Portland scene report: February 1, 2008

Sibilance starts now
January 30, 2008 2:54:31 PM

Before we get into it, be sure that PFEIFLE’s hospital stay was short, if painful, and that he’s none the worse for wear. For those hoping you’d seen the end of him, tough beans.

Someone who had a better week than Pfeifle: SONTIAGO, whose Steel Yourself managed to debut on the CMJ charts (recording the number of plays on college radio) as the “Top Debut” and number eight overall, seven spots ahead of the WU-TANG CLAN, also making their first appearance. Huzzah.

Be on the lookout for a re-release of RUSTIC OVERTONES’ Long Division, which the band were busy hand-stuffing a couple weeks back.

Some companies have employee bowling teams and some have softball teams. CHARLIE GAYLORD reports that 102.9 WBLM has a band: GURU AND THE BLIMP CRUE, which features BRIAN “THE GURU” JAMES on lead vocals, DOMINIC LAVOIE (DOMINIC AND THE LUCID) on guitar and vocals, JASON STEWART (SIDECAR RADIO) on drums, Gaylord (DIESEL DOUG AND THE LONG HAUL TRUCKERS) on guitar, JOHN SULLIVAN (JAYE DREW AND A MOVING TRAIN) on bass, and KRIS CURRIER (WBLM promotions/webmistress) on backing vocals. To no one’s surprise, they play primarily classic-rock covers. The band iares also reportedly working on some studio recordings of original songs, due out next fall.

The tightest band alive, CONFUSATRON, have released a new live album, Operation Livy, that you can have for whatever you think is fair, à la RADIOHEAD's In Rainbows. Go to www.downloadpunk.com and search Confusatron, or, if you’re a skinflint, get it for free through www.livetron.com. The disc was recorded at GENO’S back in 2006 by bassist JASON LAFRANCE and is released by the ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIMENT, which also represents PIGBOAT, COVERED IN BEES, and TAMING THE SHREW. Look for a new Confusatron studio album later this year.

Shame on you for not making mention of Portland's own Twisted Roots opening for Ozzy at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Was that not big enough news? Thanks for filling us in on Rustic Overtones re-releasing an old album instead. That was page turningly important! Maybe you should find writers who will write about the whole music scene not the select group that they like. I would hardly call that responsible journalism. I hope when The Phoenix goes up in flames it comes back a better source for local music news! No offense Rustic but this is CRAP!
