If the way in which Canadian electro/neo-trance producer Deadmau5, a/k/k Joel Thomas Zimmerman, rocketed to fame recently is any indication, than popping a giant, weird-ass animal head atop your dome is good for business. (Good news, NoBunny!) Deadmau5 closed out (and brought down the house at) this year’s Lollapalooza, inciting a tweaked-out dance party of epic proportions. Must be the reason he booked not one, not two, but four shows at the House of Blues, kicking off tonight. And every single one of them is sold out. We’re sure that you and your mau5head will find a way in to at least one of them. (If not, maybe you can catch him at the Mullins Center next week, that show hasn’t sold out — yet.) Long-time indie pop duo Kelly Crisp and Ivan Howard may have recently called their marriage quits, but their baby isn’t going to suffer any for it. The Rosebuds have a brand-new album, Loud Planes Fly Low (Merge) and it looks like Mommy and Daddy have decided to play nice. Which is good for fans of the North Carolina indie outfit. Sure, this latest effort might be a bit more melancholy than the upbeat indie pop of some past albums — who could blame ’em — but the ’Buds have retained their cohesive sound. If you missed them when they were in town with Bon Iver this summer, catch them tonight. Read more

Among its many treasures, the Boston Athenaeum houses a number of artists’ books. More than 30 — including offerings from Russell Maret, Laura Davidson, Ryoko Adachi, Stephen Dupont, Harriet Bart, Xu Bing, Iliazd — will be on display in their gallery through the winter. Read more

By now, everyone knows (or should know) that only one member of Jersey DIY punkers Screaming Females is a lady. But she rocks out hard enough for a whole band of bad-ass chicks with guitars. Our 2009 New Jersey pick for “50 Bands 50 States” is back in town to scrape your cerebellum raw and kick your ass at tonight’s show at the Middle East. The Females share their grunged-out, filthy, guitar-shredding show with a bill including Thick Shakes, Dead Ellington, and Underground Railroad To Candyland. Read more

ArtsEmerson presents The Speaker’s Progress, a production from SABAB — a theater company comprising performers from the Middle East and beyond. The Speaker’s Progress tells the story of an ambiguous totalitarian state in which theater has been banned in all its forms. A subversive play —not unlike the one you’ll see tonight? — is discovered and inspires a movement of revolt that changes the fabric of the state’s oppressive structure forever. Thursday @ Villa Victoria Center for the Arts

El Planeta sponsored tonight’s “Latin Taste of Boston” at the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts. Nearly a dozen area restaurants, including Noche and Orinoco, provide the eats at this gastronomic celebration of Latin, Hispanic, and Latin-inspired cuisine. Attendees will get the chance to nosh on both traditional and new dishes from Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, Cuba, and Spain, including Chaufa con carne (Peruvian-style beef fried rice) and Pollo rostizado (Dominican-style roast chicken). Former MFA and Seattle Art Museum curator Trevor Fairbrother pairs Worcester artist John O’Reilly’s recent collages with their inspiration — Marsden Hartley’s ’30s drawings of Gloucester’s central, rocky wildlands called Dogtown. Hartley, a melancholy gay modernist, went to Gloucester as he was developing his late, roughhewn folksy style. In contrast, O’Reilly’s collages are suave, romantic images of rocks, water, architectural ruins and male physiques concocted from vintage photos, art reproductions, his own photos, and gay porn. This esteemed consortium of chamber players, under the direction of violist Marcus Thompson, features a season devoted to one of the richest forms of chamber music, the piano quintet. The season opens with one of the least familiar, by the profound Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. There’s also a late Mozart piano trio, Charles Loeffler’s Four Poems for Mezzo-soprano, Viola, and Piano (Krista River, Roger Tapping, Mihae Lee), and Schumann’s Fantasiestücke. Read more
