When bespectacled alt-comic icon David Cross paid a visit to the Wilbur Theatre last October, he giddily tore Boston “a new asshole” — but, hey, at least he was kind enough to have “stitched that new asshole up with jokes.” To immortalize that evening’s ruthless description of his diarrhea problem (sounds like: “someone with cerebral palsy trying to unload drums from a van”), he recorded the whole shebang for his new CD, Bigger and Blackerer, which drops on May 25.
Like he told the Phoenix this past year, Cross is very much a product of the Bean, and chose the Wilbur for what he (rightfully) expected would be an intelligent, responsive crowd. He attended Emerson (for one semester, before dropping out), regularly visits Fenway to cheer on the Sox, and, as he informed his Boston audience, once worked as a disgruntled and intoxicated Back Bay bike messenger.
Blackerer captures what was only the Wilbur’s second show since it got its liquor license, and the drunken crowd howls throughout, as Cross blasts the devil (“the biggest pussy in all of fiction”), discredits Mormonism (“a religion invented by a liar”), confesses his addiction to the show Intervention, and cracks on a horror-themed porno called My Ass Is Haunted.
“Finally, someone had the creativity to blend the two genres of film that so desperately needed blending,” praises Cross. “Sure, I like to get scared. But I want to get the cum scared out of me.”
