Former MFA and Seattle Art Museum curator Trevor Fairbrother pairs Worcester artist John O’Reilly’s recent collages with their inspiration — Marsden Hartley’s ’30s drawings of Gloucester’s central, rocky wildlands called Dogtown. Hartley, a melancholy gay modernist, went to Gloucester as he was developing his late, roughhewn folksy style. In contrast, O’Reilly’s collages are suave, romantic images of rocks, water, architectural ruins and male physiques concocted from vintage photos, art reproductions, his own photos, and gay porn.
