Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) is at it again. That is to say, he's continuing to co-opt the Michael Moore modern-documentary model — only with less focus, if you can imagine. And if you've seen Spurlock's Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?, you were left to imagine quite a lot. Like that non-scripted (you can say that again!) work, his new "docbuster" — a look at the practice of product placement in films, funded by the corporations he's exposing — is a concept in search of a movie. At times, it can be quite entertaining — borderline insightful, even. Watch Rush Hour director Brett Ratner admit to being a whore! Hear actor/director Peter Berg disparage his bosses! ("GE . . . don't give a flying fuck about art.") Witness Ralph Nader accepting payola in the form of comfy (?) shoes! In the end, the film has very little to say, or new to offer. But that bottle of POM Spurlock's always drinking sure looks tasty, doesn't it?
