Review: The Good Guy

As much fun as chlamydia

"You just kind of trust the narrator out of habit, but when you get into it, you find out he's full of shit," observes Beth (Gilmore Girls' Alexis Bledel) to Daniel (One Tree Hill's Bryan Greenberg), the new member of her previously estrogen-fueled book club. She's talking about The Perfect Soldier, a novel about a former military man who falls for his buddy's girl.

Dan used to be in the Air Force before ending up on Wall Street working for Tommy (Friday Night Lights' Scott Porter), Beth's new boyfriend. Oh, and the film is narrated by the unreliable Tommy.

So guess who the good guy is? Writer/director Julio DePietro's first effort is every bit as obvious as it sounds, thudding from one symmetrically perfect cliché to another. And the three smiling young leads' backgrounds in episodic television afford this Manhattan-set romance an air of small-screen triviality. But forget Sex and the City —The Good Guy is more like an ad for Crest Whitestrips.

Any real-world comparisons between the Sarah Palin-like Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner) and her African-American opponent, Destiny (Yara Shahidi), are encouraged in this over-churned movie that presents itself as a "cutthroat story of greed, blackmail, sex, and butter."
