The Herald's selective Goodridge scoop

Credit the Boston Herald for breaking the story of gay-marriage pioneers Julie and Hillary Goodridge filing for divorce. But note, too, that the story isn't quite the scoop it pretends to be.

Two and a half years ago, Globe reporter Michael Levenson took note of the Goodridges' separation. (A couple days later, so did Herald columnist Margery Eagan.)  Somehow, though, the fact that the Goodridges split up back in 2006 didn't make it into Herald reporter Laurel Sweet's story today--or into a companion piece by Jessica Heslam and Jessica Fargen.

I don't know the Goodridges, and I have no idea what transpired between them since Levenson's piece ran. But the amount of time it took for them to legally formalize their separation has at least the potential to undercut the analysis that anti-gay marriage stalwart Kris Mineau gave the Herald ("Obviuosly, they don't hold [marriage] in very high esteem"). It's too bad the Herald left it out.

First off, thanks to the Goodridges for their work and commitment to same sex marriage while they were together.  However, the way in which this separation was dropped on the gay community back in 2006 without any explanation.  There was a fear in the GLBT community that that we could have had another Anne Heche situation or something worse at the time which would hit this "First Couple" and the same sex marriage movement.  No one was told publicly.  Fortunately, was all account of people close to the couple that it was a major fidelity issue between the two and not too shocking of a revelation to the likes of Kris Mineau (whether gay or straight).

But the real issue here is that separately Goodridges continue to be spokespersons for the movement.  Julie is giving an award at MassEquality's "Heroes of Love" Party on Valentine's Day and Hillary has been in the last year the main contributor to many Boston Herald reports on same sex marriage nationally.  Enough is enough.  There are six OTHER plaintiff couples, and I would recommend the torch being passed to one of those couples before we are all subjected to the messiness of the Goodridge divorce and all its new revelations.
