New in the Phoenix: It's not so sunny in Philadelphia

In which I consider the ongoing demise of Philadelphia's dailies at the hands of Brian Tierney--a hometown guy, whatever his faults--and extract some relevant lessons for the Globe's would-be local owners.

Good piece Adam.  You are right, the parallels are not exact but worth looking at.

Compared to other big city papers, the Boston area is unique in terms of its culture, demographics, and geography.  Boston.com is also one of the highest revenue generating and popular newspaper sites in the country.  However, the Globe still generates far more revenue from its print edition than its website.

Two primary questions here: Will the Taylors offer enough so that the Times will sell to them?  Will Platinum offer so much that the Times will be unable to honor their commitment to sell to an entity that is committed to keeping the Globe?
