Next Monday at J&W: the Future of Journalism

Tim Schick from the Providence Newspaper Guild told me earlier today there's still no word on whether the ProJo will be filling Charlie Bakst's position. No new details, either, on how the paper will proceed with layoffs.

All this is useful prologue for an event next Monday with the J-woos:

Johnson & Wales University will be hosting a forum in conjunction with the National Press Club (NPC) and the World Affairs Council of Rhode Island at Xavier Auditorium on Monday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 a.m. The NPC is currently celebrating its 100th year of existence as one of world’s premier journalistic organizations by visiting each state in the country to mark this momentous occasion. To commemorate their visit to Providence, JWU will be the site of a panel discussion comprised of local journalists, including: Tim White, WPRI Channel 12 reporter; Bob Whitcomb, Vice President and Editor of the Editorial Pages for the Providence Journal; Jim Hummel, former reporter for ABC 6; and Robert Flanders, former justice of the RI Supreme Court.  The topic for the discussion is:  “From Edward R. Murrow to Paris Hilton: How is News Defined Today”. All attendees will receive a free copy of the DVD “The National Press Club:  A Century of Headlines”. This event is free and open to the public.  Please call 598-1848 for more information.
