Taking a break from war profiteering and dodging that pesky special prosecutor, the veep and his second-in-command (who bear a noted resemblance to Cambridge agit-pranksters Ian Maxwell MacKinnon and Eric Zinman) are once again bringing their cabaret routine to Zeitgeist Gallery, testing out "new and corrected scenes and songs" from a timely Iraq-set remake of the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, in advance of a fringe-festival run timed to coincide with next year's midterms.

Sarah Tomlinson will report this in next week's Phoenix:
With the new Mission of Burma album in the can, drummer Peter Prescott and fourth member/ tape manipulator/sound engineer Bob Weston are reuniting their other art-punk band, VOLCANO SUNS, for a December 29 show at the Middle East.
They’ll be joined by KUDGEL, whom Weston once recorded at Steve Albini’s house.

    Lethal weapon.

It's said that DJs have a sixth sense that allows them to read a room: to discern -- by osmosis or tell-tale visual clues or smell or whatever -- which records will make a particular audience turn inside out on the dance floor.

OTD, apparently, does not possess this sense.

This became painfully apparent last Friday, when OTD damn near wrecked a perfectly good iPod DJ night at Bill's Bar

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, the latest skirmish in the G-Unit/G-U-Not wars: 50 Cent's mp3 watches vs. the Game's luxury-car sneakers!

Speaking of which, 50 told the Phoenix how to Get Rich, identify with Howard Hughes, and turn grams into Grammys . . . read the story here.

    Jon and Matt,
I went to see Milton Nascimento last night (a hilarious and fun evening in Medford, Brazil -- you'll get my review shortly); and there were flyers for another landmark Brazilian artist coming to town: Joyce, one of the best Brazilian singer/songwriters, is making her Boston debut (so far as I know) via Fenton Hollander's Water Music jazz shows at the Cambridge Multicultural Center, November 17.

While the rest of guyville pawns its guitars and leases laptops, Roh Delikat -- who already made their indietronica album -- appear to be scaling back the gigabeats and getting back to old-fashioned guitars and bass and drums, on some late-20th-century rock-type shit. Kristina still has the prettiest voice since Juliana Hatfield and the chillest corsets since Man Ray got man-razed.

We swear there's a good excuse this time: dingos ate our Blogger software. For serious, we're so getting off this engine. The Hidden were all like "Dude, can you post the mp3 already? People are gonna think we couldn't sell out our own rec0rd-release show!" Well, they were nicer about it. But we were sweating. Error 426? What the fuck's an error 426? So yeah, we could've had the TuesTickAlert up last night, but we wanted to give you time to chew on that Burma cover.

As promised: the Hidden released their official, Steve Albini-produced EP at the Middle East last Friday, but if you ask nicely, they've also got another new EP, Church & War, stashed behind the counter featuring covers of the Misfits, Big Black, Holy Cow, and Judas Priest. As soon as we heard the song below, we knew we had to have it: picking up where Keys to the Streets of Fear's Modern Lovers cover left off, it's round two of an occasional OTD series where great Boston bands cover classic songs by other great Boston bands.

Find these and the matching backpack at M.I.A.'s official merch depot. Spotted at www.miafans.com, which is one weird-ass messageboard. Weird, because it's for non-hipster M.I.A. fans . . . like, kids with goofy homemade avatars and whatnot.

Upside: They have links to shitloads of remixes

As if there was any doubt, the single most polarizing single of 2005 is officially "My Humps." Personally, OTD thinks the song is vile, tasteless, and utterly irresistable. We love it. But then we've long since reconciled the notion of adoring music, and art, that we don't agree with. Which leads us to the conclusion that how you fall on this song is probably gonna say quite a bit about how you view music in the early 21st century.

Well, it ain't no Bunratty's or Local 186, but as the pix above should clue you, Wonderbar is getting a crap-load cooler these days. Yes, the Allston joint known for its under-aged over-cleavaged girls and fundamentally uncool dress code is taking action to change its image. (Gee, where have we heard that sentence before?) First step: hiring Scott Richards (DJ Scott Bliss) as their brand-new Entertainment and Marketing Director.

Photoshop assembly not required: Mission of Burma meet the Click Five.

"Perhaps ONoffON picked up where 1982's Vs. LP left off. On this next recording, the band is no longer concerned with picking up where we left off in the post-punk era."

Before emo kids and Hot Topic discovered goth metal, it sounded a lot less like AFI and a lot more like Samhain. Which is something you don't have to tell New Bedford warhorses the HIDDEN. Their old band Medea Connection drew up weirder sci-fi plots than Coheed and Cambria, their new riffs will knock Alkaline Trio's teeth down their throats, and their singer does the best Danzig impersonation this side of Type O Negative.
