Relax, everyone: this is the last hour-long Office (for a while, at least)

A scene from tonight's episode

At 9 pm tonight, most of you will likely be watching Game 5 of the ALCS, which is an easy choice. The Red Sox are facing elimination and will have Beckett on the hill, who's been must-watch this October. But for those of you wondering what you'll be missing over at Dunder-Mifflin Scranton, the answer is probably not a heck of a lot. NBC gave The Office four hourlong episodes to play with this year, and, according to Greg Daniels, then requested that those be the first four episodes of the season. The results, as you have probably heard by now, have been somewhat less-than-spectacular, mostly all as a result of Michael and his over-the-top hijinks. But after this week, that all ends.

(UPDATE: Actually that was the best of these hourlong episodes. You can catch it on NBC.com)

It's too bad that a show that is funny in a half hour format can't pick it up to an hour and still do well. Some shows are just best in the time format they have, and really shouldn't be messed with
