Not really, because ranch dip is overrated and gross. Hummus is, however, everyone's new favorite snack dip/spread/standalone food, and with good cause. It is delicious, nutritious, delightful and insightful, good with veggies, pita, chips, a spoon, a fork, your hands, your face and more.
While it is a breeze to make (chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, blender, electricity, mouth, mmm), it's easier to just buy it at the store. This raises a tough question for the uninitiated: which brand is best?
Sabra (Go Mediterranean!) is making quite a name for themselves as the leading supermarket hummus brand, especially as their new guerilla pita-chip-dipping campaign gains momentum around Boston.
That's right, Bostonians- if you spot a big yellow ice cream truck parked at your school with a guy dressed up like Aladdin luring students to the back with offers of free hummus, don't call the cops, because it's not an ingenious new candy-in-the-van scam (although hummus is like candy to me)- supposedly, it's the real deal.
All you have to do is get a free sample pack from the truck, text in the handrwritten code on the lid, and before long you'll receive a text from the all-knowing Sabra Man Sam, helmsman of and mascot for the campaign. Reply with your name and the name of your school, as well as your social security number, mother's maiden name, birthplace, and the name of your first pet, street, and favorite teacher (just kidding), and SMan Sam (as he is known on his Twitter) will text you the next time he visits your school.
Simply meet the truck at the appointed time and receive your free box of hummus. Don't even bother trying to find official verification of this info online. I found no mention of it on the Sabra homepage, and word of mouth seems to be the only means of finding out about it.
Is it too good to be true? This intern will surely find out after his 4 pm rendezvous this very day. If you don't hear from me by 4:45, tell my roommates I went down in a heroic blaze of small arms fire and slow motion video. Farewell.
