Spring fever

SURFER BLOOD | Great Scott | March 2 | Sweet mother of Superchunk, we've been waiting for a band like this. The Palm Beach quartet recorded their debut, Astro Coast (Canine), in their dorm room at the University of Florida during their freshman year — and if that (plus the requisite eighths of shwag) sounds like a recipe for a puny, piecemeal product, the album is anything but. Think Yo La Tengo: The College Years and you've got a good sense of what you're in for.

THE BIG PINK | Paradise Rock Club | March 27 | Londoners the Big Pink surfaced last year with the release of their debut full-length A Brief History of Love (4AD), and few could fathom that they were a duo. Somehow, all it took was the talents of Milo Cordell and Robbie Furze to produce 11 of the most massive-sounding tracks of '09 (if not the whole dang decade). The songs are a bristling mix of Jesus and Mary Chain true-gaze grit with high-energy Klaxon-esque electro-rock — it's hard to imagine them not absolutely ruling live.

ANGELIQUE KIDJO | Somerville Theatre | April 2-3 | It's great that you're excited for that new Vampire Weekend disc and all, but if your Afro-pop chops are stuck at thrice removed and you're itching to get closer to the real thing, there's no better way than spending an evening with Benin's Angelique Kidjo. Her latest album, Õÿö (Razor & Tie), finds her rediscovering her own batch of influences, covering Aretha, Curtis, Otis, and James to name a few — and the results are intense. The Somerville staff might be tightening a few bolts in their rows when this two-night stand is over.
