"Ultimately, we're a pop group," says JiJi. "But we like to be different, and we want to incorporate everything. When we sing about message-y stuff like, you know, 'Be yourself' or 'Chase that dream,' it's because that's what we actually do." And if the band's current achievements may seem to imply that they are primarily aiming at other kids, think again. Jillian: "We are well aware that if we have to perform in front of a bunch of 20- or 30-year-olds, it's going to be tough, but we make music that's danceable and fun. So, you know, even if the positive messages don't exactly work with that audience, the music is catchy enough so that it doesn't even matter."
"If you look at our iPods, there's everything, from theater to rock to pop to R&B to country to hip-hop," adds Simone. And a quick listen to the tracks the Girls are working on for 2011 confirms this pan-genre restlessness: there are songs that would work on modern country radio, songs with more of a dance or hip-hop swagger, and then straight-up pop songs like their current single, "Fairytale."
At this point, its clear that the Girls are just working maniacally hard, having fun, and willing to see what happens. "We're just trying to take over the world," JiJi declares, "one pair of ears at a time!"
