Notes on the New Year

The New Year

It may seem odd that, with Chris Brokaw back in town to play drums, Matt and Bubba Kadane are performing as the KADANE BROTHERS on the bill with Brokaw this Saturday at the Middle East. After all, the NEW YEAR, a band the Kadanes started with Brokaw on drums a decade ago, are still a going concern. They even have a new homonymous album all set for release this September on Touch and Go. But the Kadanes have always moved deliberately, something that dates back to their seminal slowcore outfit Bedhead. Playing as the Kadane Brothers is just their way of easing back into performing live after spending a reported four years of writing and a year of recording The New Year. “I think they just want to go out and let people know that, well, that they’re alive,” Brokaw says with a laugh. “I think they did want to do New Year shows this summer, but it was the label who said that they should wait until the album comes out, which makes sense.” For anyone planning to ask Brokaw to record in the fall, take note: he’s got some touring with the New Year to take care of first.
