Kentucky:
Young Widows
CITY: Louisville
SONGS THAT GOT US: “Old Skin,” “Lucky and Hardheaded”
ON THE TUBES: MySpace, Web site, YouTube
RECORD LABEL: Temporary Residence
WHY THEM? Stoner metal, doom metal, whatever you prefer to call ultra-heavy metal with actual vocal melodies, coming from the Young Widows it just sounds like, well, Louisville — before it got all refined and Slinty. The Young Widows stir the ghosts of ’90s Louisville sludge forces like Wino, Crain, and Rodan — and beat the snot out of them in the process. Even suckers for stoner or doom metal, or anyone lately enjoying bands like Part Chimp or Pissed Jeans, won’t find the Widows’ scorching (if slow-burning) riffage hard to handle.
BONUS BIT! The band released a series of split singles with other artists, including legendary Kentuckian Bonnie “Prince” Billy (a/k/a/ Will Oldham).
