Girl in a Coma
CITY: San Antonio
SONGS THAT GOT US: “El Monte,” “Pleasure and Pain”
ON THE TUBES: MySpace, Web site, YouTube
RECORD LABEL: Blackheart
WHY THEM? This female trio comprising two Mexican-American sisters and their high-school pal updates dreamy, melodramatic ’50s rockabilly for the post-punk set. Grande-voiced singer/guitarist Nina Diaz — who overshares at one point on their new album, Trio B.C., that “I want to suck all of your toes” — has a thrilling instrument, which blends a breathy twang with an Anglophilic affect. Girl in a Coma (now signed to Joan Jett’s label) suggests the answer to the hypothetical question, “What would it sound like if Lush caroused with Patsy Cline in a West Texas saloon?”
BONUS BIT! Morrissey invited Girl in a Coma to open for him on tour after kicking Kristeenyoung off the bill for suggesting onstage that he loves, loves, loves cunnilingus (or something to that general effect).
