Not a feel-good underdog story By: BROOKE HOLGERSON4/25/2006 6:13:22 PM
Based on true events, Mountain Patrol is the sad story of volunteers trying to protect endangered Tibetan antelope from poachers. Told from the perspective of a journalist covering their story, and directed with stark realism by Chuan Lu, the story takes on allegorical proportions as the men disappear into the mountains to battle nature and almost always lose. They’re classic underdogs, but this is not a feel-good movie with a triumphant finish. The poachers, better equipped and better paid, make brief, violent appearances, and their dirty work, which is not for the faint-hearted, has a visceral immediacy that contrasts with the breathtaking surroundings. The beauty lingers in the mind, and the cruel price nature pays.
