Zoom

A snooze fest

Peter Hewitt, the sadistic director of Garfield: The Movie, gives us Tim Allen as a burned-out superhero coerced by the government into training a new group of wacky child recruits. They’re getting ready to face an evil so boring it takes up less than 10 minutes of screen time. For the teens (though I can’t imagine any teenager sitting through this) there’s a little romance between the cute superheroes-in-training, and for the little kids (and only the most desperate parents should attempt it) there are some fart and booger jokes. Classy stuff. Allen looks almost as bored as I was; Courteney Cox (!), Rip Torn (!!), and Chevy Chase (!!!) ham it up with little or no success. Call this one Galaxy Quest — another movie in which Tim Allen plays an arrogant jerk who learns lessons about teamwork and friendship — without the humor, charm, or wit.
