When I was growing up, my mother’s gingerbread was a dessert staple in our house. There was little better than ending a meal with a giant square cut straight from the hot pan and topped with homemade whipped cream. (My mother, use whipped cream out of an aerosol can? Never!) In fact, that gingerbread was one of the culinary delights — and there were many — that I missed most when I moved out of my parents’ house. What a delicious surprise it was, then, to stumble upon the gingerbread sundae at Stephanie’s. A generous piece of warm, moist gingerbread comes swimming in a pool of not just hot fudge but caramel sauce, too. The whole creation is topped with a scoop of gingersnap-molasses ice cream and, returning me to my childhood, a dollop of homemade whipped cream. The only question that remains: will Mom like it?
Available for $9.95 at Stephanie’s On Newbury, 190 Newbury Street, in Boston. Call 617.236.0990.
