Zoo-Doria Animal Biscuits

Cool cats . . . and birds, and elephants, and turtles, and . . .

People with little kids are lucky. Not because they have to wipe runny noses, but because they get to eat all those fun kid foods, such as Cheez Doodles, pigs in blankets, and my personal favorite: animal crackers. Not having children, I miss out on these critter snacks. (I could buy them for myself, but they’re hard to find — and really, how cool do you look munching on little circus-animal cookies if you’re not pushing a designer stroller at the same time?)

So imagine how happy I was when I found ZOO-DORIA ANIMAL BISCUITS from Italy in the same gourmet food store where I buy cheese, wine, and very expensive bottles of extra-virgin olive oil. These little treats have that same nostalgic, comforting milk-biscuit taste as the kiddie variety, with just the right amount of sweetness and a soft but satisfying crunch. And, maybe because they’re Italian, they taste better. They’re also better for you, being one of several foods made by Doria, a third-generation family-owned business that eliminated hydrogenated fats from their products in 2004. Since 11 biscuits are only 140 calories, you can eat a whole bunch without guilt. Now that’s cool.

Available for $4.95 for a 10.5-ounce bag at South End Formaggio, 268 Shawmut Avenue, in Boston. Call 617.350.6996.
