VIDEO: The trailer for One Missed Call
Shannyn Sossamon (Rules of Attraction) and Ed Burns make a fetching duo on screen, but their charms can’t conceal the flimsiness of this remake of a 2003 Japanese horror flick that itself borrowed heavily from the Ringu/Ring franchise. Here, you’re not afforded even the courtesy of watching a video before receiving the call that predicts your death. Nope, just the signature ringtone. Sossamon’s coed Beth is the latest in the line of death-call recipients; Burns does his stiff-jawed best as the cop trying to save her. The cheap silliness involves a cellphone exorcism, Margaret Cho playing it straight as a nay-saying detective, and a ghoul who haunts a burnt-out psych ward. The unintentional camp makes for some eye-rolling interest early on, and French director Eric Valette does manage a few hair-raising moments, but by then, the movie has missed by a mile. 97 minutes | Boston Common + Fenway + Fresh Pond + Circle + Suburbs
