An urban fairy tale

PRETTY IN ORANGE: Katherine Heigl dresses the part.

Katherine Heigl, who not long ago lamented the sexism of her breakout hit Knocked Up, stars here as a single woman who’s obsessed with weddings and is secretly in love with her boss. Jane has been an enthusiastic bridesmaid in 27 weddings (hence the title), but it’s the prospect of the 28th — between her boss (Edward Burns) and sex-kitten sister (Malin Akerman) — that sends her over the edge. There to catch her (after first annoying her for a really long time!) is a pretty-boy journalist (James Madsen channeling Rob Lowe) who, whadd’ya know, writes about weddings. All the hallmarks of the not-appropriate-for-anyone-over-14 “urban fairy tale” are here, starting with the “plain” heroine played by a beautiful Hollywood star. But Aline Brosh McKenna’s script, though hardly as sharp as her previous one, The Devil Wears Prada, has some surprises, director Anne Fletcher moves things along, and, well, I always cry at movies about weddings. 107 minutes | Boston Common + Fenway + Fresh Pond + Circle/Chestnut Hill + suburbs
