Class of 2011: Eleven Boston bands to ring in the New Year

The bands you should be listening to this year
By MICHAEL MAROTTA  |  January 6, 2011

 SkiMask

SKIMASK | Urban Dictionary describes a "Boston Ski-Mask" as "when one puts one's scrodom [sic] over his partners [sic] eyes while she sucks him off." Boston noise-punk trio Skimask are more difficult to define. The underground was buoyed by a fist full of aggro noise in 2010, as Viva Viva drummer Dominic Mariano stepped out from behind the kit and up to a sea of pedals and effects to create a sonic sucker-punch beatdown that's both numbingly brutal and oddly comforting. Skimask's hardcore electronic noise, anchored by spoken-word vocals and howls, colored festivals near and far (from Kentucky's Cropped Out to Boston's Homegrown), countless basement shows (Gay Gardens, Problem House), and their de facto home field of the Temple in Jamaica Plain. In 2011, it might be time for Boston's most dangerous band to start assaulting the clubs.
