Popo
CITY: Philadelphia
SONG THAT GOT US: “Kill Tonight”
ON THE TUBES: MySpace
RECORD LABEL: Mad Decent
WHY THEM? The Malik brothers (Zeb, Shoiab, and Hassan) are certainly atypical of the output that star-making producer and baile-dealer Diplo has had his cocoa-buttery hands on— absent as it is of any street-cracking beatwork. But we’re psyched he’s putting out the Philly trio on his Mad Decent label, if only because it means more kids balancing brand new ballcaps on their domes at weird angles will be exposed to some catchy-ass weirdcore that sounds like the All Scars burning the B-52s in effigy.
BONUS BIT! According to Mad Decent: “[Popo] first met Diplo down in Atlanta when he was playing those Dark Meat shows — he liked them so much he lit a huge firework off on stage, did the wind up, smoke got in everybody’s face, and he got thrown out of the club.”
