Mmmm...beer - and double-mmm...food

Last night, the fine folks at David's in Monument Square hosted their first beer dinner with the brewers from Harpoon Brewery, from Boston. They were kind enough to invite me along to taste the menu Chef Neil Handwerger dreamed up with the help of Patrick Morang, the beverage manager, and (apparently) large quantities of after-work alcohol at a "sanctuary" somewhere in Portland.

Bee Balm

I got a chance to try Maine Mead Works's new Dry Strawberry Mead on cask at Novare Res last night. It was delicious and fruity (fruit meads are called melomels, btw) and when I drained the cask with my last glass there was a bit of bee balm floating in it. Hooray for the waning days of summer!

Stay sober on Labor Day

There could be an extra price to pay for Mainers who drive drunk over Labor Day weekend. Yes, we know it's always a bad idea, and it comes with various fines and jail or prison time. But this year, the Maine State Police and the Maine Beverage Company (the private company contracted to operate the state's liquor monopoly) will have video crews in police cars to film arrests - footage that will then be used in TV ads to discourage drunk driving.

Gritty's birthday surprise

Most 20th-anniversary celebrations are a little more involved than this:

The Gritty McDuff's folks knew 2008 was their 20th anniversary year. But the word on the street is that yesterday a Gritty's staffer (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty) realized that July 21 was the actual, on-the-day, 20th anniversary of the founding of Gritty McDuff's.
