One of Boston’s favorite mixmasters and music makers, DJ C (a/k/a Jake Trussell), was invited to play New York City, sort of out of the blue, alongside Chicago ragga MC and fellow Mashit artist ZULU at the Freek Factory party. It sounded awesome and we wanted to go, but we ended up e-mailing Jake afterward. Turns out it was everything you might expect — he writes that it was one of their “Victorian-cyber-goth-ragga-step raves. Their previous parties took place in an underground Brooklyn warehouse locations, but this was at a more legit venue in Manhattan — the Element Club — a former bank building with gorgeous vaunted ceilings and balconies for the freeks to play on.” His MC flew to NYC from Chicago. “He and I have been collaborating on some recent and upcoming releases, but this was our debut performance together.”Surrounded by “a semi-naked fire dance featuring two young ladies” and “an older guy who seemed to be a professional at spitting/swallowing fire,” DJ C and Zulu did their thing, which is a mess of beats and bass, ragga versus Boston bounce, for the enthusiastic crowd. “There was also British Columbia’s DJ Lion-S dropping a hot dubstep set and resident DJs and musicians, who at one point combined to form a sort of electronic/Middle Eastern jam band. Keep an eye out for the Freeks!”
If you haven’t heard of local MC BOMSHOT, we wouldn’t blame you: dude’s been flying beneath coverage for a minute now, but according to his Web site, the Boston mic commander recently joined up with OMEGA RED and West Coast Wu-Tang members Christ Apostle and the Holocaust to form the WU-TANG SWORDZMEN. “I’m honored and it’s a great privilege to be affiliated with the Wu and the Wu-Tang Swordzmen,” blogs Bomshot. “No other team has taken hip-hop further in terms of knowledge, skill, and styles, so being a part of that is a blessing for me.” The debut of Bomshot’s own project, the Devilz Rejects, a duo with Jedi Mind Tricks member Jus Allah, has been pushed back to January 27, but that’s not a bad thing: the label, Dynasty Muzik, signed a distribution deal with Caroline Records out of New York and thought the release was strong enough to warrant adding bonus tracks, instrumentals and remixes. A native of Mission Hill, Bomshot is joined by Wu-Tang original members the GZA and U-God and local MC VIRTUOSO on Necronomicon. Hip-hop tome Elemental magazine calls the release “thunderous.”
Last week we again mentioned MIGHTY MYSTIC, and wouldn’t you know, the reggae vocalist drops a mix CD this week. Released by Split2nd Entertainment, it jams 50 tracks into the mix, including some of the Mystic’s finest songs: “Riding on the Clouds,” “Better Times,” and “Can’t Be Stopped.” Boston kid DJ MASTER MILLIONS hosts the project, and some of the names from the track list jump out like Gerald Green: Buju Banton, Luciano, Fat Man Scoop, Elephant Man, Clinton Sparks, and Cuban-born reggaetón giant Pitbull all give Mystic props. And how can a benefit to save Boston’s last roller rink get more desirable? When you get New England’s best DJ team to mix the music. ALL SKATE, the organization founded by LINDSAY CRUDELE, is holding its second skate party at Chez Vous this Wednesday, December 6, and it’s enlisted Rhode Island’s finest: CERTIFIED BANANAS. If you’ve seen their Enormous Room residency kill month after month, the thought of being on wheels to enjoy the duo’s sound has to be irresistible. Circuits attended the first All Skate benefit October 18 and gave it a hearty thumbs up: mirrored walls, colored lights, raffle tickets — what more could you want? Crudele and friends are calling this one “A Winter Wonderland on Wheels” featuring ELI “PAPERBOY” REED, disco overlord JOSEPH COLBOURNE, and of course the Bananas boys. There’s even a food drive: any non-perishable item you bring will be donated to the Boston Food Bank the following day. So bring a can plus $12 (or $10 in advance) and get to the Dorchester-Mattapan line (11 Rhoades Street). Not only will you be helping to save a 75-year-old Boston community institution, but you’ll hear some real current and retro class while you have wheels for feet.
