U2 3D
Ego supersized
By

U2 3D
Bono’s ego supersized on a two-story screen and rendered in looming, larger-than-life 3-D? It’s a role he’s well suited to. “Vertigo” is an apt opener for this stunning piece of filmmaking by Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington. The first-ever live-action 3-D concert movie, it was shot, primarily in Buenos Aires, using nine pairs of state-of-the-art cameras. They swoop and zoom and fade and pan, giving a sense of motion and omnipresence. You feel you’re there — but more so — bobbing and weaving above and around Bono, showman and shaman, the Edge, working his sonic sorcery with a different guitar for nearly every song, stolid Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr., workmanlike behind his kit. Thundering through 5.1 Surround Sound, the music is incredible. As is the energy of the crowd, a heaving ocean, arms aloft, eyes ecstatic, mouths shouting every word, thousands of glowing cellphones dotting the deep and cavernous gloom. Even better than the real thing? An argument can be made.

Freaks, Geeks, and Faux Bono
As Bay Staters, we recognize that our European ancestors sure knew how to roll: scarlet letters, sticks up asses, if-she-drowns-she's-not-a-witch-if-she-floats-she's-a-witch-so-let's-kill-her legal applications.

Not unlike Swedish, Tagalog, and Esperanto, music is a language, with its own conjugations and (lewdly) dangling participles.

Real-world follies
For hard rock, heated debate, child-care tips, and latex puppetry, 2006 was a banner year in television. Who says the culture’s going to the dogs?
Fleecing, stealing, shilling, and sucking with impunity
Over the busy holiday season, a tremendous wealth of worthless music-news tidbits slipped through the cracks, unnoticed by a lethargic, goose-sated America.

It was with The Joshua Tree that they became stadium-ready international superstars and solidified their relationship with producer Brian Eno.
Review: It Might Get Loud
Some guitar teachers will tell you there’s a right way and a wrong way to play the guitar. But Davis Guggenheim’s rousing new documentary, It Might Get Loud, reminds us that that’s not true at all.
