Made of Honor
Scottish-related gags and other dumb stuff

Made of Honor
is not your usual formulaic romantic comedy: it’s stupid, its leading man is unlikable, and its jokes are unfunny and sometimes cruel. Patrick Dempsey is dreamy but unswallowable as rich, callous womanizer Tom, who relies on long-time best friend Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) for the only meaningful — but ever-platonic — female relationship he can sustain. When Hannah is called away to Scotland for six weeks Tom — can you believe it? — realizes what he’s missing. So he’s shocked when Hannah returns with the strapping, seemingly perfect Colin (Kevin McKidd) — did I mention that he’s Scottish royalty? — as her fiancé, and of course he’ll do anything to get her back. Even if that means being the maid (made?) of honor to get a chance to stop the wedding. It also means a host of Scottish-related gags and treacly deliberations from Tom and Hannah.
Made of Honor
looks sweet but is actually toxic: it’s every bit as dumb as its title.

Bad will hunting
Films about Boston tend to be no better than their worst Boston accent.
Mission implausible
Like the adrenaline shot that invigorates one of his characters, television wunderkind J.J. Abrams’s stab at the billion-dollar Tom Cruise spy franchise briefly gets your heart pounding, only to ultimately fail at bringing much-needed life to the latest reworking of Bruce Geller’s TV relic.
The Heartbreak Kid
The only honor the remake is likely to vie for is “most athletic sex scene” at the MTV Movie Awards. That, or “most audible queef.”
Maine pop star bids to get FedExed
Back in the late ’90s, Bangor native Howie Day was a hard-working, constantly touring local singer-songwriter armed with little more than a guitar and a four-track.
Boston, beer, and Bobby Brown
Last weekend at the Orpheum, Bobby Brown was not indicted but inducted.
Dedication
The solid performances and edgy touches by actor Justin Theroux go far, but it’s all wasted on a Grinch.
The Ten
Winona Ryder, for example, plays a newlywed who gets sexually liberated by a dummy (the wooden kind).
Potter-schmotter!
No reading required.
Fools rush in
If you think Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Daniel Day-Lewis, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, and Judi Dench are all hopelessly overrated, then WGBH/ITV has your TV movie.
The Big Hurt: Clubbing baby seals: not okay
Pop icon RICKY MARTIN paid a humanitarian visit to Cambodia recently in support of victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
The Big Hurt: Fire sales
The world’s largest collection of recorded music has gone up for auction on eBay with a starting bid of $3 million.
