Despite the occasional feminist undertone in some songs — like "Girls XL," an ode to girls who aren't afraid to take up space as well as a play on the words "girls, excel" — Potty Mouth are a distinctly non-political band. " 'Dog Song' is really funny because I wrote it about my dog," says Weems. "A lot of people think it's a metaphor for women being oppressed. I don't ever say that's the wrong interpretation . . . but I did write it from a dog's perspective."
So don't call them a riot-grrrl band. "We are not a riot-grrrl band," says Einbinder. "It's just an annoying conflation because — yes there are some elements of our sound that are evocative of riot-grrrl, but people see all-female [bands] influenced by the '90s and automatically put that label on us . . . but we're not a political band. I love riot-grrrl but it's not the genre we identify with."
