The AMERICAN IDOLS LIVE TOUR 2008 will rupture and burst all over the DCU Center this Saturday, August 9. Take that information and do what you will. . . . If you’d rather have a pleasant musical experience that night, you could catch DISAPPEARER at O’Brien’s, where they’ll be joined by BRAIN BANGER, FURNACE, and (God help us) COCTOPUS. . . . The rest of the week sports a philanthropic streak. This Saturday, August 10, ZuZu will host ACTION PARK, a sweaty dance-party benefit for the Kirsten A. Malone Scholarship Fund (geared toward young artists and named after “Lady K,” the beloved and departed local arts heroine) featuring DJs MARK E. MOON, MAC SWELL, DJ PROTECTION (from UV Protection), and DAN “THE COYOTE” SHEA. . . . In a more rocking take on do-gooding, Great Scott hosts a benefit for SPARE CHANGE on Monday with VIVA VIVA, STEPHEN BRODSKY, and DOOMSTAR. . . . Last but not least, a two-night benefit for local Little League players at Church thrown (and headlined) by JASON BENNETT & THE RESISTANCE. JB will be joined by the SCARS and SUPER POWER on August 14 and (God help us) VAGIANT on August 15. See? Three ways to feel good about going out at night — or three ways to feel like utter shit in the morning. Whichever.

Nneka, who comes to the Middle East next Thursday, sounds a lot different on the phone from what you hear in her songs. She speaks softly, allowing stretches of silence to throw her thoughts into harsh relief. On record, she's all business.

It'd be easy to understand a resistance to "ambient" music — beyond all of its unfortunate Enya and dusty Eno connotations.
  •   THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ANDREW FENLON  |  January 20, 2010
By the time I get Andrew Fenlon on the phone — two days after the airing of his now-notoriously contentious American Idol audition — the world around us has already split into three factions: those who loathe him, those who love him, and those who need a reminder: who is Andrew Fenlon?
