DregNog Video Advent Calendar, Day #10: 'Tis the Season to Lose Your Sanity, City of Lost Children-style
The City of Lost Children is
the stuff of Christmas nightmares -- and regular ones as well. This dark
fairy tale co-directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (director of Amelie and A Very Long Engagement )
tells the story of a mad scientist who can't dream, so he kidnaps
children and tries to seal theirs. The crowd of scary Santas in this
scene pales in comparison to the rest of the oddities in this beautiful,
bizarre, fantastical film. I was lucky enough to catch this movie at a
mega-plex a few centuries before the apocalypse; and if you've never
seen The City of Lost Children on the big screen, you owe it to
yourself to do so -- its macabrely hallucinogenic visuals and
mind-bending story are best appreciated in a darkened theater full of
strangers and film students. And if you've never experienced the trippy grandeur of this film, you're in luck: The City of Lost Children is playing tonight at the Brattle Theatre at 9:30, as part of their "Alt-Xmas" series.
