The Week in Geek, May 23-29: Art, Authors, Alice and the Undead

EDIT: The Zombie March, which we had previously believed cancelled, has risen from the grave in an act of old-fashioned zombie resilience. Looks like the disappearance of the Facebook event was nothing more than a technical difficulty. The living dead will indeed walk this weekend. See below for details.

For a sunny week in the end of May, this week's events are spectacularly morbid. It's jam-packed with many a celebration of gorey fun, from book events to film screenings to marches and parties celebrating the undead.

[required reading] Center for Disease Control's Zombie Preparedness Guide
The CDC is a source that we can all trust for survival tips in the worst situations, and its website recently featured a guide to surviving one of the most dangerous threats to human society today: the zombie outbreak. The guide offers useful tips, strategies and supply lists critical for any warrior against the forces of darkness.

Monday 5.23

[author] S. J. Chambers @ Porter Square Books 7pm
Author S. J. Chambers comes to Porter Square Books to read the good word of the Steampunk Bible. She brings along artists and steampunk experts Jake von Slatt, Mike Libby, Aleks Sennwald and Jess Nivens for this multimedia exploration of steampunk's roots.

Tuesday 5.24

[novelist + film] China Miéville @ Brattle 6pm + Alice @ Brattle 8pm

Author China Miéville reads from his newest novel Embassytown, a space fantasy about aliens and figurative language. Following the reading, Miéville will introduce a screening of the 1988 Alice. Not Burton, not Disney--Czech Filmmaker Jan Svankmajer's Alice goes down a different rabbit hole entirely. This acclaimed retelling of the Lewis Carroll classic mixes stop-motion animation and live-action sequences that blur the lines between reality and fantasy.

[theater] That 70s Deconstruction Show @ Roberts Studio Theater 7:30pm
The only thing more camp than a variety show is a 1970s variety show. Radio host Seth Rudetsky takes the audience for a trip down psychedelic memory lane with clips from the best and worst of 70s evening entertainment.

Friday 5.27

[film] Blue Velvet @ Brattle 5, 7:30, 10pm

The Brattle presents David Lynch's iconic neo-noir mystery about a young man who finds a disembodied ear in the middle of a field. This screening will celebrate the film's 25th anniversary, and will include door prizes.

[author] Melissa Marr @ Brookline Booksmith 7pm
YA novelist Melissa Marr comes to Boston to read from her first adult novel, Graveminder. It's the classic, familiar tale of returning home, readjusting to small town life, and stopping said town's certain doom at the hands of the walking dead.

Saturday 5.28

[braaains] Boston Zombie March VII 3:30pm
And speaking of the walking dead, the Boston Zombie March is on this weekend. Come dress up as a zombie or a frantic, still-breathing survivor and lurch through the streets of Boston. The march begins at South Station at 3:30 and is slated to continue until 8:30.

[party + music] Boston Zombie March VII Afterparty @ TT and the Bear's 6pm
For anyone of age and looking for some lively (deadly? living-deadly? dead-lively?) fun post-march, TT and the Bear's is having an afterparty for aforementioned march. The event will feature a set by local alternate-reality alternative-rock band HUMANWINE.

[paradoxes] Worried All the Time, Boston's Children's Show for Adults, Premiers @ Arts at the Armory 7pm
Featuring free food and great music, this premiere of Boston's new show caters to the adult-children we all secretly are. Local artists, comedians and musicians land on on the tiny fringe planet of Allston in this show that is based loosely on "The Little Prince." The gloriously bizarre event begins at 7pm and is $10.

Sunday 5.29

[games] Board Game Appreciation Day @ Pandemonium Books & Games

Pandemonium celebrates all things tabletop this Sunday with free stuff, demonstrations and tournaments of familiar games like Munchkin.

Monday 5.30

[art] Free Admission at the Museum of Fine Art

The MFA is celebrating Memorial Day by letting everyone in for free. Their current exhibitions include Modernist Photography, vintage fashions by Scaasi and the ever-popular Chihuly: Through the Looking Glass, which features breathtaking blown-glass sculptures by glass-sculptor Dale Chihuly.
