If
you found last week's events too high-minded and cultural,
then do we have news for you! This week's, we give you a multitude of events ranging from trashy to flashy ... and also, curiously, an unusual number of
opportunities to dress up in ridiculous costumes: there's a renaissance
fair, a pirate crawl, a J-pop concert, and the Pride Idol show. And of course, suiting up for The Goonies and "Hooked on Who" would be completely understandable (read: inevitable). In other words, this is the week to get decked out and go all out.
Not
that there will be no intelligent discourse. There is a discussion on
local food, and a reading from a Pulitzer Prize winner's memoir. It's
also Boston Pride Week, which means there will be plenty of events
thoughtfully examining past and future progress; and Bikes Not Bombs
will celebrate sustainability the best way they know how: with bikes!
Tuesday 6.7
[film + discussion] Ingredients + Panel @ Brattle Theatre 7pm
The film Ingredients

it. After the film, there will be a panel discussion.
Wednesday 6.8
[double feature] The Goonies + ET Double Feature @ the Brattle 4:30pm, 7pm
Slip
into those footie pajamas, because the Brattle's double-feature event
is about to transport you back into your childhood. The cult-classic
and regular classic are screening in succession. In honor of the event,
Baby Ruths are being sold at the concession stand for a limited time.
The jury's still out on Reese's Pieces.

quality Thursday evening.
Friday 6.10
[theater] Journey to the Heart of X Minus One @ the Piano Factory 8pm

Productions Theatre Company presents its "serial science fiction
theater experience," combining original sci-fi shorts and bits from
1950s radio broadcasts. It promises to blend the old and the new to
create a unique blend of extraterrestrial theater, repeating three
times this weekend and next.
[film] Wet Hot American Summer @ Coolidge Corner Theatre Fri + Sat, 11:59pm
What's campier than camp films? According to writer/director David Wain, nothing. Wet Hot is a parody of all the old camping tropes, and though it was panned by critics, it has achieved cult status.
[don't you forget about me] The Breakfast Club @ Somerville Theatre Fri + Sat, 11:59pm
All
are invited to this midnight showing of the John Hughes classic at the
Somerville Theatre: Brains, athletes, basket-cases, possible-criminals
alike.
[Time and Relative Dimensions in Space] "Hooked on Who," Doctor Who Special screenings @ the Brattle Theatre Fri, Sat, Sun 9:30pm
This
long-running British classic has captured the imaginations of scifi
nerds for decades, and with the show's recent revamp, a new generation
of annoying tourists can travel to England in hopes of getting their
pictures taken next to a blue Police Box. This week, the Brattle
celebrates the past, present and future of Doctor Who by showing episodes and celebrating castmembers old and new.
Saturday 6.11
[science] Extreme Weather Day @ MoS 10am
Too soon? Or just weirdly timely? This
family-friendly event at the Museum of Science features immersive
hands-on exhibits, lectures by top meteorologists and demonstrations of
storm-tracking radar technology.
[yon faire] Silver Kingdom Renaissance Festival in Charlton, MA Sat + Sun 10am
Hearken, fair Lords and Ladies! The
Silver Kingdom Renaissance Faire opens in Charlton, MA, this Saturday
for its two-weekend stint. It will feature all the faire accoutrements
we've come to shamelessly love, from music to swordfights to
theme-food.
[j-pop] Reni's Maid Show @ All Asia Bar 12pm
There
are few things in this world more bizarre J-Pop, and this weekend singer Reni brings a
little bit of Tokyo-style insanity to All Asia Bar. Though pink wigs, frilly
frocks and thigh-highs are not required, cosplayers do get a $2
discount.
[yarr] Pirate Crawl/Booze Cruise @ 1 Long Wharf 3:30pm
Whether
or not the Pirate Crawl will actually be worthy of the term "nerdy"
remains to be determined; it might turn out to be nothing more than a
bunch of trashy people who, due to the movement of the boat and eye-patch-induced loss of depth perception, trip from the pitching of the
vessel and spill their Jacks or margaritas over any unfortunate passers-by. But then again, it is also a third excuse to get dressed up in a
ridiculous costume on a Saturday afternoon.
Sunday 6.12
[boats] Boston Dragon Boat Festival @ Charles River, Cambridge Side 12pm
The
Dragon Boat Festival has been going on for 2300 years, and while the
Boston event hasn't been celebrated quite as long, it is still the oldest
Dragon Boat Festival celebration in North America. It features boat
races, a banquet, and a free festival with arts demonstrations and
Asian food.

is holding two events this Saturday. The first is a Bike-a-Thon,
running either 15, 25 or 65 miles around areas south and west of
Boston. The riders end up at the Green Roots Festival, which celebrates
environmental sustainability. Essentially, it's Christmas in June for
the bike nerds among us.
[YA author] Joyce Raskin, My Misadventures as a Teenage Rockstar @ Brookline Booksmith 2pm
Musician-turned-author
Joyce Raskin will be reading from her young-adult novel this weekend as
part of Brookline Booksmith's Writers and Readers series. The book is a
work of fiction, but draws from her own experiences as well. She's
bringing along fellow musicians Hilken Mancini and Mary Lou Lord.
[museum dance party] Super Secret Summer Surprise With Dan Deacon @ the ICA 8pm
With
promises of Twister games, cartoons and multimedia presentations, the
ICA's Super Secret Summer Surprise was already a should-attend event.
But then they revealed that their special guest was Dan Deacon, whose
terrifying/bizarre/amazing artistry (see the video above) and sick beats will have you
dancing all night. So now it is a must-attend event.
