The mess formerly known as the internet: Prince decries the web, releases new album old school style

Prince has always been ahead of the curve. The first pop star to make androgyny and sexual ambiguity sexy (sort of.) The first man to legally change his name to an unpronounceable symbol. The first man to change it back again after realizing how totally weird that was. And now, he is officially the first person to herald the impending implosion of the world wide web. In a recent interview with the Mirror, Prince revealed to a nonplussed reporter that "the internet is over." (Which is news to us over here at the Phoenix.com. Crap.) Subsequently, Prince is going to be the first person since approximately 2000 to release an album only on compact disc. Which, in and of itself, is sort of revolutionary. Both iTunes and YouTube have been banned from using his music. If you want a copy of his new album, 20Ten, you're just going to have to haul your ass over to Best Buy and purchase it, dammit. (Unless you happen to live in the UK, where it is set to be released for free as a part of a promotion on July 10.) Prince went on to say that the internet, like MTV, is long past it's heyday. Worse, it seems that surfing the web is bad for your health. "[Computers] just fill your head with numbers and they're no good," the pop god explained. And while we agree that there is some serious crap floating around cyberspace (far, far away from this site, of course) we aren't entirely on board with the theory just yet. However, if the internet does crash and burn in the foreseeable future (Y2K-10), you heard it here first.
