Redstone Contest

A couple of weeks ago I again had the privilege of serving as one of the judges of the Redstone Contest, the annual short film  competition for BU film students, and once again  I came away impressed and encouraged by the talent, passion, and originality demonstrated by the participants. You can see what I'm talking about by attending a showcase of the best of the selections (including the winners, which will be announced at the show) that will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University.

Among those I highly recommend are Dimitri Kouri (CGS'09, COM'11) and Zack McGeehan's (COM'11) "Salty Dogs," a beautifully photographed and expertly edited day in the life  of Winthrop lobster fisherman ploying their endangered trade. Devoid of any commentary beyond the playlist of the oldies radio station the crew is listening to, it employs the minimalist and illuminating style of documentaries like "Sweetgrass."

Maya Tanaka's (COM'10) "September" combines gritty local color and authentic performances into an ironic coming of age tale which includes my favorite line, the Melissa Leo-esque, "Don't move, Kevin!"

Maybe my favorite is the poignant, hauntingly dreamlike "Your Way Home" by Pietro Nigro (COM'10). Set on the Sicilian coast, it's nearly wordless fable about childhood abandonment and hope of rescue sustains a mood of dread and wonder through its brooding atmosphere and  startling details.

The show is free. It's your chance to see the future of movies -- if we're lucky.

The Tsai Performance Center is at 685 Commonwealth Ave.
