See these films: "Yilmaz Güney: From 'Ugly King' to Poet of Despair" series at the HFA

The late Yilmaz Güney brought international attention to Turkish cinema with Yol (1982), which he wrote and co-directed with Serif Gören. It's a harrowing, visually striking tale of released prisoners who find living under the then military dictatorship ruling the country even more dismal and confining than jail. See it on Saturday at 7 pm as part of the Harvard Film Archive's series "Yilmaz Güney: From ‘Ugly King' to Poet of Despair," which opens tonight at 7 pm with Güney's stark and strange Hope (1970), in which the director himself stars as a poor cart driver who pursues far-fetched schemes to improve his lot. The HFA is in the Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St, Cambridge | February 25-March 7 | $9; $7 students, seniors | 617.495.4700 or //hcl.harvard.edu/hfa.

40 Brattle St, Cambridge
