THE CONDO'S NICE: The inhabitants, less so
Those of us accustomed to Boston-scale apartments will at once appreciate what The Break-Up has to offer: the condo. It’s really nice. The same can not be said for its inhabitants, a couple whose relationship is in its death throes as they duke it out over who gets to stay. Not that it’s ever clear what Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston were doing together in the first place. He’s an ignorant oaf; her attempts to get him back by making him jealous are so childish, they could be seventh-graders playing house. After a few funny scenes early on, things settle into a mean vibe. The real laughs come from the supporting characters, none of whom gets enough screen time from director Peyton Reed. Vincent D’Onofrio does weird and wonderful things as Vaughn’s uptight brother and Jason Bateman steals his few scenes by simply underplaying. They even outshine that gorgeous condo, no easy task.
