The Times Co.'s last, shittiest offer

My close personal friend Dan Kennedy suggests that the Times Co.'s proposed 23 percent pay cut for Boston Newspaper Guild members will unify the union--kind of like management's late-breaking math error did last week.

I've got a different take. The pay-cut proposal strikes me as the Times Co.'s way of saying: You won't compromise on lifetime-job guarantees? Here's what your intransigence will get you. The reaction from the Guild rank-and-file, I predict, will be something like this: Why the fuck aren't we compromising on lifetime job guarantees?!?

Adam, I am *very* close to this and I can tell you that you are right on. It has started already, trust me on this. The cry that started tonight will be a full fledged howl tomorrow. Three quarters of the guild don't have that guarantee, and certainly don't want to take a 23% pay cut for the one quarter that do. It's not going to help union solidarity, that is for sure.
