More Banner: what's your definition of "out of business"?

A few minutes ago, I reported that, according to Bay State Banner publisher Melvin Miller, the Bay State Banner is just ceasing publication, not going out of business.

Now a Banner advertiser forwards a recent message from Sandra Casagrand, the Banner's VP/marketing and Miller's wife. Here it is:

I’m really sorry to report but the Banner is not publishing after this week’s paper.  We cannot remain in business in this economic climate and will continue to look for new owners/investors while we are closed so at some point it can reopen and continue on its mission.  Until then, there is no Banner.  Real bummer – and sorry for the inconvenience. [emph. added]

Based on this, I'd say Miller--who called the notion that the Banner was going out of business "excessive"--is being a tad Clintonian here.

OT: How sad that with all he did, (and could have done but didn't), Clinton is immortalized to many by his disingenuous attacks on the English language. Perfect description, though.

When you don't have the option of losing $10 million a month and continue printing like other papers (globe) because there is no big company backing you - then when the revenue dries up - you have no other option but to close the doors while you are working on other funding.  We recently received a grant from the Boston Foundation, as well as other funding for other projects, but not enough to continue printing a paper on a weekly basis for now.  Unlike daily papers, running online only is not a viable option for us. Whether that other funding and ad revenue that we've been working on ever gets realized is an unknown so we have no other option but to tell advertisers that we have closed our doors for now.  That's the downside of being a small independent paper.

The daily carnage report of our traditional newspapers continues.

Will the last newspaper, publisher, editor, reporter, advertiser sales person, press person, delivery driver, and carrier leaving the room turn off the lights and close the door.

The challenge and assault to our press freedoms continues.  Will someone somewhere wake up before they become extinct?

Sorry to see the Banner to go in these difficult times. I hope they will resume publishing the newspaper soon.
