Globe union shocker: Guild board moves against Totten

Fascinating twist in the battle for control of the Boston Newspaper Guild, the Globe's biggest union: the Guild's executive board has taken action against Guild head Dan Totten for (if I'm reading the legalese correctly) allegedly inappropriate handling of union finances. The email sent to Guild members this afternoon follows; I'll post more as the situation develops.

 ------------

Dear BNG Colleagues:

Information has come to the attention of the Executive Committee that President Daniel Totten has engaged in conduct which appears to be violative of the constitution regarding financial matters involving Local funds.  The Executive Board has taken the following interim precautions:

Cancellation of the Union credit card
Suspension of Totten’s check signing authority
In addition, an immediate comprehensive external audit of Union finances is being undertaken.

Pursuant to CWA Constitution specific charges are being drafted.  In accordance with the constitution President Totten will have the opportunity to respond to the charges at or before trial.  Once filed, the membership will be provided with the copy of the charges.

In Unity,

Executive Board Officers:

Scott Steeves, Vice President

Kathy McCabe, Recording Secretary

Patrice Sneyd, Treasurer

Jim Herndon, At-Large
