I had the pleasure of attending a spirted party a few weeks back at the Pawtucket home of Laurel Casey, the chanteuse and provocateur. Sadly, Laurel's Wednesday night residency at the Sidebar is coming to an end. One can only hope that another local nightspot offers her a home.

The new and improved Jake’s Bar & Grille on Richmond Street reopens tonight (the 9th) and kicks off a Columbus Day welcome back weekend with three highly diverse shows, something this modest venue has always excelled at, thanks to [Jackie] Nichols and her son Jake.

Jake's Bar & Grill, which has been enlivening Providence's Jewelry District with music, food and drink since 1999, plans to close for renovations.

Proprietor Jackie Nichols tells N4N that the bar will close after this Saturday. She hopes to reopen after Labor Day.

Jackie says the renovations, to create a warmer ambience, have been mulled for a long time and are overdue.

The latest outbreak of Drinking Liberally in Providence is set for Wednesday this evening at the Wild Colonial, 250 South Water St., Providence.

Signatures may be gathered to protest John McCain's vow to veto every beer (an odd initiative, given his wife's beer connection).

Kudos and congrats to Josh Miller and his crew at Local 121, which is due to celebrate its one-year anniversary on Thursday. The downtown Prov boite has emerged as a popular watering hole and venue for all manner of entertainment, including DJ's in the tap room and film discussions and political get-togethers downstairs.

Everyman, the new bar and bistro by former Custom House Tavern proprietor Leah Reynolds -- whose coming was first reported here -- is getting ready to open:
