Rare Frequencies: Slow cooking

The folks at Bassic have done it again, bringing yet another top-rung dubstep artist to their basement digs at Good Life. This month they’ve snagged APPLEBLIM (a/k/a Laurie Osborne), who runs the lovely techno/dubstep fusion label Apple Pips and is a founder of the legendary Skull Disco imprint. Although he made his name as a producer, Osborne has recently been much in demand as a DJ. In 2008 he put out a series of brilliant, off-kilter mixes, among them Volume 6 of the celebrated Dubstep Allstars series. As with his own tracks, his mixes tend to glide across boundaries, fusing dubstep, techno, and whatever else strikes his well-heeled fancy.

Few local artists do slo-mo drone with quite the conviction of OUEST. It’s all about textural grit, infinite drift, and not much else to distract you. Veterans of Boston’s improv, noise, and sound-art scenes, Brendan Murray, Howard Stelzer, and Jay Sullivan will be working their somnambulant magic at the tiny Outpost 186 next Thursday. Also on the bill are the duo of BRYAN EUBANKS and VIC RAWLINGS on samplers and cracked, homemade electronics (so expect some judiciously executed squeals and squonks) and the young, modular synthesizer drone whiz BENJAMIN NELSON. You can check out an extended live set from late last year by Nelson on his Web site.
